Lignacite is proud to announce its sponsorship of the 15th annual Relay for Life in Bury St Edmunds. This 24-hour, family-friendly event will raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK while bringing the community together in the fight against cancer.
More than 300 people are expected to attend this year’s event, which will kick off at midday on 6th July at Suffolk’s Nowton Park. Teams, including children and dogs, will take it in turns to walk a continuous loop around the 400m track, with some clocking up in excess of 50 miles over the course of 24 hours.
The relay is the culmination of a year’s activity, with teams celebrating 12 months of raising funds for Cancer Research UK. Each team committed to raising at least £2,000 over 12 months in whichever way they chose, from golf days to bake sales and more, before a final sponsorship push for the relay. Last year’s efforts saw more than £38,000 raised by local people – and this year’s total is expected to be even bigger, with the total amount raised over the past 15 years hitting the £500,000 mark.
Bury St Edmunds’ Relay for Life Co-Chair David Cianciola says: “Local businesses like Lignacite are fundamental to the success of the fundraiser, so we’re really grateful for their support. These organisations ensure that participants have the facilities needed to complete a day of walking while maximising the amount raised for Cancer Research UK.”
Nick Franks, Chief Operating Officer at Lignacite, adds: “Here at Lignacite, we’re very much a part of the local community, so we were delighted to contribute to organising this year’s event, which sees people from all walks of life come together in the fight against cancer.”
This year’s Relay for Life will open with a special lap walked by cancer survivors, while a poignant Candle of Hope ceremony will be held at 9pm, where participants can light a candle and share memories of loved ones affected by cancer. Alongside the walking, the day will be filled with live music, games, a raffle, fancy dress and themed laps, including a festive Christmas lap with costumes and carols.
