Lignacite Achieves ‘Very Good’ BES 6001 Rating

We are proud to share that our BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing certification has improved from a Pass to a Very Good rating, marking a significant step forward in our sustainability journey.
The improved rating reflects a concerted effort across the business, particularly in the procurement of aggregates and materials. SHEQ Manager Marvyn Candler, who played a key role in the process, explained how the team tightened its procurement standards, ensuring that all suppliers – regardless of size – are certified to ISO 9001 for quality, ISO 14001 for environmental management systems, and ISO 45001 for health and safety.
“Larger suppliers were already on board with these accreditations,” said Marvyn. “But for smaller suppliers, it took time, support and plenty of conversations to help them see the business benefits of being accredited. We worked closely with them to show how certification not only meets our requirements but also strengthens their own reputation as responsible businesses.”
With backing from the company’s directors, Marvyn introduced a formal Supplier Code of Conduct, based on ISO 20400 guidance. The document includes commitments to sustainability, ethical business practices and the elimination of modern slavery – making clear what we expect from our supply chain.
Beyond procurement, we stepped up our efforts to support local communities. In addition to sponsorships and community group support, we have introduced a Charity of the Year partnership, reflecting our belief in acting responsibly both within and beyond our operations.
Marvyn, who will oversee the next BES 6001 audit, is optimistic that we can go even further in future. “Achieving ‘Very Good’ is a fantastic result, but we’re not stopping there. With the improvements we’ve made and the continued momentum across the business, I’m confident we can reach ‘Excellent’ in the next round.”
