BREEAM

BREEAM is used for the assessment of buildings other than dwellings

There are eight BREEAM elements within its assessment of environmental impacts. Credits are awarded in each and a set of environmental weightings used to produce an overall score. Lignacite products can contribute to compliance in three areas:

Energy

Lignacite's products can be used in external cavity or solid walls and can be designed to achieve high levels of thermal performance. This will contribute towards the building's required reduction in CO2 emissions

Health and Wellbeing

Acoustics - Lignacite's products can be used to construct separating walls designed to achieve the specified level of performance

Thermal Comfort - In many cases advantage can be taken of the inherent thermal mass of blockwork masonry in helping to achieve the required level of thermal comfort. This advantage can be maximised when using Lignacite AFM products internally. Not only do these products offer a high level of thermal capacity ('heat store'), they are also used in intimate contact with the surrounding air, thereby optimising the benefit of thermal linking.

Materials

Materials Specification (Major Building Elements) - Lignacite's products can be used to construct elements such as external and internal walls (including separating walls), and beam and block flooring. Many of the constructions can achieve an A rating in accordance with the Green Guide to Specification, thereby contributing towards maximising the number of credits available under this category.

Responsible Sourcing of Materials - Lignacite Ltd can demonstrate compliance for its products through the use of an independently certified Environmental Management System. In order to qualify for credits, Lignacite's products will normally be used to construct the following building elements:

  • external and internal walls
  • internal walls
  • as part of the substructure construction e.g. foundation walls
  • suspended floors in situations where a beam and block floor is specified.

Code for Sustainable Homes

The Code for Sustainable Homes was introduced in 2007 to set higher standards of sustainability performance for new homes across nine design categories, rating the whole home as a complete package. There are 3 key areas of the Code where the use of Lignacite's products can contribute towards Code compliance. The relevant design categories are:

Energy and CO2 Emissions

Lignacite's products can be used in external cavity or solid walls in conjunction with various types of insulation to achieve high levels of thermal performance. This will contribute towards the required dwelling emission rate (DER).

Materials

Environmental Impact of Materials - Lignacite's products can be used to construct elements such as external and internal walls (including separating walls), and beam and block flooring. Many of the constructions can achieve an A rating in accordance with the Green Guide to Specification, thereby contributing towards maximising the number of credits available under this category.

Responsible Sourcing of Materials (Basic Building Elements)

Lignacite Ltd can demonstrate compliance for its products through the use of an independently certified Environmental Management System.

Health and Wellbeing – (Sound insulation)

Lignacite's products can be used in separating walls to help achieve the specified level of performance.

Ashlite, Lignacite and Lignacrete blocks can be used to construct cavity separating walls meeting the requirements of Building Regulations as well as the requirements of a number of Robust Detail specifications. Solid separating walls can be built using Lignacrete blocks. A purpose designed acoustic block, Lignacrete E-WM-9, has been developed to meet the requirements for solid walls in accordance with Robust Detail specification E-WM-9. A number of specifications are also available that are capable of achieving higher standards of sound insulation than those given in Approved Document E to the Building Regulations. These are generally in accordance with certain Robust Detail specifications and can be used to gain credits for improved sound insulation.
